Lights! Camera! CHARACTER EDUCATION! (1)

Character counts.........yes it does. What is character? It is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. I attended a training at AISL some years ago and encountered the program called 'Character Education'. Character education includes a broad range of educational approaches such as service learning, social-emotional learning and civic education. These share a goal to helping young people become responsible, caring, and contributory citizens. We have a semblance of this with our Moral/Civic Education and Social Studies but Character Education is based on six ethical values that everyone can agree on - values that are not religious, political or culturally biased. It is taught with fun activities so that it's enjoyable. Take a look at this: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. These six pillars are a measure of the qualities children learn to lead and imbibe as they form their personalities. I recognize that the effort expended on this type of endeavor requires sustainability. It is my understanding that a character-based society could begin from establishing such curriculum in schools.   3. @M2Z I dont see why this character education will not be possible if only people will focus on not squandering money and offer good education they will be able to use any curricuum that is best for children

    It all boils down to the teacher and parents.You were opportuned to attend a program on Character education but with all the pillars mensioned,the questions remains "How many parents/teachers/guardians possess these characters?".We must always take note that children were born blank and whatever they leanrn from their immediate enviroment is what they see as being right.For instance,a child who was never truly cared for by the parent or guardian is not likely to understand the rudiments of caring for anyone.Organising conferences/workshops at different levels to educate parents/teachers/guardians on the importance of these characters are most crucial.A curriculum could be constructed on character educations and be taken in all schools and the children get home and are taught something else.Its something that concerns us all and shouldn't be left to the school system/curriculum alone!!
